Beware of Career Marketing Firms - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Beware of Career Marketing Firms - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Last week I received a request from a family member of mine in transition. He was asking me to evaluate a proposal he had received from a career marketing firm. He wanted my opinion because I’m a career coachand because I myself had once been victimized by a similar firm. His proposal cover letter opened with an aggressive tone heralding the fact that the firm was working with executives who were laid off prestigious organizations, members of academia, representatives of nonprofits, and an assortment of clients ranging from younger people just out of college to mature ones with occupations in every industry and covering every income range. Basicallybut without saying sothe firm said it caters to everyone who has money to pay! The next FIVE pages outlined the firm’s services in a very attractive way for someone in transition. And we all know that when someone is, for instance, desperately hungry, anything that looks like food seems scrumptious and delicious. The firm stipulated its feewhich is, typically, 5 percent of the client’s highest achieved income (calculate how much that would be for you!). Then there were supplementary servicesprovided at an additional $500 for each one. In order to activate the agreement, it needed to be signed and accompanied by a deposit. If the client were not satisfied with the program within two weeks, said the agreement, the company would rework the material. At this point, though, your money is gone forever. The firm listed offices in various cities nationwide, so I attempted to research the company a bit further. My research led me to a résumé-writing service. Next, I Googled the company nameand searched on other search engines as wellto try to learn something about the proposal/agreement signer with the title of managing director. I would have expected that a person with such a heavy responsibility (after all, the company claims to have offices in more than half a dozen cities) would have at least a presence in cyberspace as well. But no, even LinkedIn did not reveal the signer. There have been in the past, and there still exist today of course, many similar career marketing firms. I’ve learned of them either through my circle of acquaintances or because they gained their fame via the media’s reporting that they got sued and soon thereafter closed their doors. Of course, unfortunately, those who’d paid for such services were left high and dry. As a professional career coach, I say unequivocally that everyone in transition should get help with their job search.   It’s up to the job seeker to solicit that help by asking others for their opinions. Job search networking groups such as those listed at http://www.landingexpert.com/HTML/index.html can provide information, as can an online search for individualized coaching services via LinkedIn or Google. Typically, such individualized career coaching services are your best bets because they’re more individualized and because the fees come to 50 to 75 percent less than those charged by the career marketing firms I’ve described here.

Blogging for Executive Jobs Build Your Personal Brand and Get Smarter - Executive Career Brandâ„¢

Blogging for Executive Jobs Build Your Personal Brand and Get Smarter Since I began blogging in 2007, I’ve been recommending blogging to help land executive jobs. Blogging is a very smart way to: become highly visible, build credibility as an industry thought leader, showcase your unique value to the employers youre targeting, andcommunicate your personal brand. I’ve blogged about blogging many times over the years. Often, Ive compared the way it impacts my own business marketing efforts, to the way it will similarly benefit executive job seekers. In fact, if you’re at the top executive level, you should be blogging in some way: on your own blog,as a guest blogger on someone elses blog, orby commenting on relevant blogs. The wider your visibility online, the more likely you are to be found by people sourcing and assessing talent through social recruiting. Blogging for executive jobs also makes you smarter Blogging, if done well, makes you smarter, therefore an even more valuable potential asset to the companies and organizations you’re targeting. Through my own 10+ years of blogging, I’ve learned so much more about my field than I ever could have without blogging. To keep my content fresh and interesting, I’ve been forced to do considerable research. I need to stay up to date on various trends, better ways to use social media, new job search methods and strategies, and other things to help my clients better position themselves as good-fit candidates. I’ve become smarter about executive job search, personal branding, online visibility, social media, networking, and so much more. Likewise, job seekers who blog well become smarter about their target employers and their industries, and are better prepared to speak intelligently about these things when they network and interview. And, of course, since blogging is writing, it helps improve your communication skills. Writing about things new to me makes the blogging experience ever-energizing and pleasurable. At any given time, I have about a dozen ideas for new posts I can’t wait to find the time to write. Tips for blogging well Write about a wide range of topics relevant to your industry andareas of expertise. In this way, you’ll be using plenty of the keyword phrases people Google to find information and job candidates. Blog regularly. The more times you post something, the more web pages you’ll be creating, bumping up the number of search results for your name. Make a habit of blogging about your target employers, and their leaders, products and services. They probably have Google Alerts set up for these names and terms and will be led to your posts. Set up your own Google Alerts for the same names and keywords relevant to your target employers, plus your other relevant keyword phrases. See what other people are writing about these things. Write posts that spotlight other bloggers in your niche, with links to their sites. For further reach, post your blog posts on your social networks â€" updates, Groups, Twitter,

America39s Best Resume Writing Service Reviews

America39s Best Resume Writing Service ReviewsReading the articles and seeing the resumes of America39s best resume writing service is one thing, trying to make use of such a service is quite another. You can easily get caught up in the allure of free services or packages before you even start looking at samples of the best applicants' resumes. What if this provider turns out to be one of those who is a scam? You need to put some realistic expectations into your mind before you start looking for the best one. It is true that free service providers are easier to find as compared to other options but you should not go with the first service provider you find. It is more prudent to search for them online rather than going to their physical offices. The internet provides the potential for you to compare different programs, discuss your requirements and make a list of the best one.Free resume writing service reviews are a great source of information on the services which you can then use t o assess the best. A lot of people believe in the reverse method of using online sources. They find credible and unbiased reviews and then sign up with the service which they think is the best. It is a simple way of choosing but it may not be the right one. To get a comprehensive assessment of a particular company, you must look for reliable sources which include independent service provider reviews.Free resume writing service reviews are available in different forms and formats. The most common form is a review that can be found in magazines, journals and newspapers. These reviews are based on the opinions of writers who have at least some experience in the field. The reviews are supposed to be honest but you should be careful when it comes to reading them. One of the problems here is that these reviewers are not experts and therefore it becomes difficult to take their opinions seriously. Another problem is that some service providers use the reviews to promote their service without actually verifying its authenticity. Such fake reviews are a waste of your time and money so do not be lured by their promises. It is true that you can read the actual service which is being offered without any verification, but the problem is that you may be getting a fake report too. If the service provider or recruiter uses such reviews to market his or her services then they have violated the law. Also, if the reviews are available on the internet but fake websites are using the reviews then that can also be an illegal activity. Such sites could be penalized under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).There is no such thing as a free lunch and nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to any legitimate service. Scammers don't care about genuine reviews, because they will use anything at their disposal to attract you. It is important that you maintain a level of skepticism when it comes to reviews.Free service providers have something to gain by creating mislead ing reviews and making bogus claims. Therefore, you should never trust free review sources for anything. Instead, go for those that offer free access to resume samples and validate the information.

How To Pick Yourself Up After Hitting Rock Bottom In A Job Search - Work It Daily

How To Pick Yourself Up After Hitting Rock Bottom In A Job Search - Work It Daily Most of my friends and clients know that I love hiking. The reward involves beautiful mountain vistas and breathtaking wildflowers. But with anything worth doing, there’s always a downside. Mine happens to be falling. A lot. And I’ll even reveal a secret: My nickname is “Stumblina” â€" bestowed upon me by my concerned but bemused husband as my falling down while outdoors happens so frequently. Related: 3 Keys To A Successful Job Search So, one weekend, after successfully navigating a very deep (and steep canyon) enroute to our campsite on Mt. Hood here in Oregon, the return trip wasn’t as lucky. After making it all the way back down to the bottom of this monster canyon, I saw some other backpackers looking very tentative about crossing this bridgeless river. They had spent the better part of at least 10 minutes walking back and forth trying to figure out a way across. They hesitated, so our group passed them and crossed. The other three people in my party popped right across the water; it was now my turn. Feeling cocky, I got about three steps across when my left foot slid on a wobbly rock, and I had that sinking feeling that my balance had just evaporated. Falling, I crashed hard into the water and was quickly flopping around among rocks and ice-cold glacial water, totally soaked. Completely embarrassed and utterly humiliated, I had now just wiped out in front of a number of other hikers. Not so cool now, eh? So, what do you do when you’ve hit rock bottom? You reach for the nearest tools to start getting out of the situation. In my case, these were my hiking poles, which were in danger of being swept away. I got out of the river and assessed the situation. No injuries, fortunately. Just a very bruised ego and some minor scrapes and bumps. Then, I pulled myself together, and we continued our hike back to the car. This situation is really not so different when you’ve hit rock bottom in a job search. You can feel embarrassed, out of control, and hurt. And it’s ok to hit rock bottom once in awhile. It reminds us that we really are human after all. But like my situation, staying there in that rocky freezing river isn’t a place to linger, so the only way out is to pull yourself together, dust yourself off, and get moving again. But even more importantly, how you look back over your shoulder and view how you hit rock bottom matters just as much. Do you shrink or recoil from the memory? Or, do you do what I did: Cheerfully wave at the tentative hikers still on the other side, and yell, “C’mon in, the water’s great!” This post was originally published at an earlier date.
